The present department of Oral Biology and Oral Pathology started as a unit of Oral Pathology in the department of Oral Surgery/Oral Pathology in 1968 and had its 1st pioneer Professor in June 1969, that is, Prof. Roger Browne, a visiting Professor from University of Birmingham. The present department of Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology/Biology was created by the council of University of Lagos in 1981 with the following members of staff; (a) academic: Prof H. A. Mosadomi, Dr. D. R. Sawyer, Associate Professor, Dr. O. Odukoya, Research Fellow II and (b) Laboratory Staff; Mr. F.A. Fasan, Chief Technologist, Mr. Mayor, Assistant Chief Technologist, Mr. Ibok and Mr. F. Adeshan, both were Senior Laboratory Assistants and one Administrative Staff.
The department has since lost the following staff to retirement and other types of exits from service. Prof. H.A. Mosadomi, Dr. E.O. Taiwo, Prof.O.O Odukoya Dr. D. R. Sawyer, Dr. (Miss) O.M. Ogundana, Mr. Mayor, Mr. Fasan, Mr, Adeshan, Mr. Ibok and Mrs. G. E. Inyang,Mrs.T. Ololeye.
Present staff strength consists of Prof.(Mrs.) O.F. Ajayi, Prof. (Mrs.) O.A. Effiom, Dr. A. O. Akinshipo Senior Lecturer, Mr. S.B. Ajala, Chief Lab. Technologist, Mrs. M.A. Adeloye, Principal Lab.Technologist , Mr. J. E. Omoike, Principal Executive Officer II, Mrs F. O. Arowolo, Personal Asst. I (currently serves as the Departmental), Mrs. A. E. Essien, Administrative Assistant.
The department has had the privilege of producing the Chief Medical Director of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, in person of Prof. O. Odukoya who served .0from 1998 – 2006. The department has also been involved in active academic research and publications spanning through Epidemiological, Histochemical, Immunocytochemistry and Tissue Culture studies, as well as experimental Animal Studies in Carcinogenesis.
The department has successfully trained more than (16) Resident Doctors, who have obtained Fellowship Certificate either of the West African College of Surgeons or National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria and are serving as specialist Oral Pathologists in both Nigerian Hospitals and abroad.

The Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology / Biology
The department of Oral Biology and Oral Pathology is located in the Faculty of Dental Sciences in the College of Medicine, University of Lagos. The location is at the Idi-Araba campus of the University.
The department teaches Oral Biology courses, which is the Basic Sciences which prepares students for understanding of Clinical Dentistry. In addition, the Department teaches Oral Pathology, which is the basis of understanding disease processes upon which clinical dentistry practice is based. The Department is responsible for Oral Biopsy services as its major clinical practice. The Department also trains the Resident Doctors that specialize in the practice of Oral Pathology.
Departmental Staff also undertake Research Projects geared towards understanding genesis of a number of diseases encountered in clinical practice with the objective of applying appropriate treatment, and ultimately preventing these diseases.

DEPARTMENTAL ACTIVITIES:
- The department runs courses in oral biology and oral Maxillofacial pathology.
- The department runs oral biopsy services for Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH).
- The department runs weekly departmental seminars for Resident Doctors.
Undergraduate students on posting in the department also attend.
- The department runs weekly outpatient clinics on clinical oral pathology.
- The academic staff serves as External Examiners and visiting staff to some other Universities in Nigeria.
- The department participates regularly at the Bi-Annual Congress of International
- Association of Oral Pathologists during which either oral or poster presentation are given by academic staff. And also participating in the Nigerian branch of the IAOP
SUMMARY OF THE COURSES AVAILABLE
ORAL BIOLOGY 300 Level : This is a didactic course which involves lectures, seminar/tutorial and practical sessions. The lectures cover oral anatomy, oral embryology and oral histology in one of the modules.
- In another module lectures cover topics in Oral Physiology and Oral Biochemistry.
- In another module lectures cover topics in Oral Microbiology and Oral Immunology.
- Lectures are given with the aid of power point presentations and laboratory sessions.
ORAL PATHOLOGY 500 LEVEL: This consists of didactic lectures, seminar/tutorial and practical in general basic oral pathology and special topics in oral pathology.
ORAL PATHOLOGY 600 LEVEL: The 600 level course focuses in clinical aspect of oral Maxillofacial pathology.
