Head of Department - Professor Donna Chioma Umesi
Professor Donna Chioma Umesi is a Professor of Restorative and Conservative Dentistry and a Consultant Dental Surgeon.
Professor Donna Chioma Umesi obtained Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) degree in 1990 from the prestigious College of Medicine, University of Lagos. She had her specialist training in Restorative Dentistry at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital and became a Fellow (FWACS) of the West African College of Surgeons in April 2000. In addition to her degrees in Dentistry, she holds two Masters degrees, in Public Health (MPH) and Public Administration (MPA) both from the University of Lagos.
Professor Donna Umesi got appointed as a Lecturer 1 in the Department of Restorative Dentistry, University of Lagos and assumed duty on the 1st March 2001. She got promoted to the rank of Senior Lecturer in 2007 and got appointed as an
Associate Professor in October 2016. She was appointed a Full Professor effective from October 2020.
Professor Donna Umesi specialized in Restorative/Conservative Dentistry and has special interest in Aesthetic/Cosmetic Dentistry and Dental Materials. Professor Umesi’s research interest involves elucidating the burden or magnitude of a particular disease or dental condition and proffering preventive and corrective solutions to the problem, with special interest in tooth discoloration and local production of dental materials. She is an erudite scholar who has presented several papers on her research work at many national, regional and international conferences. She has published over 50 papers in peer-reviewed journals and has co-authored a chapter in a book on Biomedical Engineering.
Professor Donna Umesi is a visiting Scholar to several universities such as New York University, University of Washington, USA, University of Cape Town, South Africa and University of Radboud, the Netherlands. She holds memberships of Nigerian Dental Association, International Association for Dental Research, FDI World Dental Federation, Commonwealth Dental Association, Nigeria Medical Association, Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria and Nigeria Society for Restorative Dentistry. She is an ardent dental public health and mental health advocate who is involved in carrying out Christian medical missions and public health outreaches in churches and communities. Professor Umesi’s professional desire is to see every patient walk out of her clinic with a healthy, beautiful smile after any encounter with her.
